Hello friends and supporters of the Prison Book Project!
2012 was another busy year for PBP. Thanks to the hard work of many
volunteers, we were able to package and send reading materials to over 780
prisoners in New England and Texas. We also sent 440 copies of LockedOut
to gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and queer prisoners around the country.
The letters we receive from folks we send books are proof of how important
our work is. Many include artwork, poems, and statements of heartfelt
gratitude. We're excited to share this incredible work with you, and
invite you to check out our upcoming Prisoner Art Show at Food for Thought
Books in Amherst. Details to come on the art show!
As you can imagine, the ongoing need for books in prison is immense.
Despite working at our present capacity, we received hundreds of requests
for books last year which went unanswered due to lack of space, book
donations, funds, and volunteers. We would LOVE to be able to increase our
capacity and thereby increase the number of prisoners we can serve, and
so, over the winter months, we've hatched a plan for some Big Changes!
We have decided we need to relocate to a space that will be more
accessible to our volunteer base, and we are asking for your help to find
one.
We are seeking a location in Northampton or Amherst, within walking
distance of PVTA lines. The space must be dry, with no risk of flooding or
mold. About 200 square feet is needed for continuous book storage. We need
the use of additional work space with tables or counters during our
scheduled work days. The space must be secure, but accessible to our
organization. A public space such as a community center, business, church,
or college could be a good fit for us. Lastly, we need a space that is
donated, as all our funds go directly to postage to send books into
prisons.
We will not be having volunteer hours this spring as we search for a new
home and gear up for the big move. If you miss us, there are still plenty
of ways you can contribute to this effort in the meantime! If you would
like to help us search for space or organize events, please be contact us
at prisonbookproject@riseup.net . When we find a space, there will be lots
of opportunity to help us organize and pack and move! And, as always,
your financial contributions are needed and appreciated!
Thank you for your support over the years. We wouldn't exist without you!
Sincerely,
Annie, Debbie, Dena, Erin, Kris, and Phoebe
